Natural Gas Storage Facilities

AS THE MOST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY FOSSIL FUEL, NATURAL GAS makes An important CONTRIBUTION TO an AFFORDABLE AND ENVIRONMENTally friendly energy transition by offsetting short-term FLUCTUATIONS IN CONSUMPTION VIA STORAGE system.

Natural gas storage facilities are an important cornerstone for the future security of energy supply. The SEFE Group develops and coordinates natural gas storage projects in Europe to ensure a demand-oriented supply of energy even when fluctuating renewable energies are not available. In total, the company has investments in ten natural gas storage facilities or participates in their implementation.

The Etzel, Lower Saxony, we collaborated with our partners BP Europe SE and Dong Energy to commission in May 2013 a cavern storage facility that has efficient access to the most important traiding hubs in Europe. The project was expanded in a second stage until 2018. Since then, the strategically located market storage facility has had a working gas volume of around 1 billion cubic metres.

In addition the SEFE Group via its WINGAS subsidiary has an investment in the natural gas storage facilities in Jemgum and Rehden, which is the largest pore storage facility in Western Europe with a working gas capacity of about 4 billion cubic metres. We have also launched a number of storage projects outside of Germany – for example in Serbia, Austria, and the Czech Republic.
