Natural gas for transport

GAZPROM NGV Europe is developing the market for natural gas as an environmentally-friendly fuel for road transport and shipping.

There are around 100,000 natural gas vehicles currently registered in Germany, where they are playing a significant part in reducing harmful emissions in road transport. Natural gas vehicles produce much less CO2 and nitrogen oxide than conventional drive systems, and hardly any soot particulate. It is with this in mind that Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), and metalworkers union IG Metall signed a joint declaration committing to increasing natural gas’s share of the energy mix used to power Germany’s road transport tenfold by 2020.

GAZPROM Germania’s specialized wholly-owned subsidiary Gazprom NGV Europe GmbH (hereinafter referred to as: 'Gazprom NGV Europe' or 'NGVE') runs projects to enable the clean and efficient use of natural gas as a motor fuel. These efforts focus on developing an infrastructure capable supplying of trucks and passenger cars with compressed (CNG) and liquefied (LNG) natural gas. In cooperation with its strategic partners, the Gazprom Group is thus making a contribution to environmentally friendly mobility in Europe.

Gazprom NGV Europe currently operates 47 natural gas filling stations in Germany and 14 another natural gas filling stations in the Czech Republic. NGVE's product portfolio includes various types of technologies and filling stations, such as filling pumps integrated into conventional filling stations and stand-alone filling stations specially designed for CNG. NGVE also has many years of operational experience in the field of LNG refuelling. Gazprom NGV Europe operates both publicly accessible filling stations and private natural gas filling stations built specifically for major customers, fleet operators and logistics companies.

NGVE is always focused on further optimizing its CNG filling station network: In order to provide its customers with an infrastructure tailored to their needs, NGVE analyses and implements not only the construction of new filling stations but also the takeover of existing filling stations from market participants and the relocation of present natural gas filling stations.

Gazprom NGV Europe GmbH offers its business and private customers a wide range of products and services as part of its activities as an operator of natural gas filling stations, e.g. the option of payment by fuel card for natural gas refueling in cooperation with DKV EURO SERVICE GmbH + Co. KG. The main advantages for NGVE business customers are cashless payment at all DKV acceptance points and the receipt of monthly invoices with a list of all refuelings and fees for the customer. In addition, NGVE offers a discount scale on the monthly natural gas refueling at its natural gas filling stations, depending on the quantity refilled.

NGVE also sees great potential for powering heavy-duty vehicles with natural gas. Natural gas (CNG and LNG) is the only alternative fuel for which functioning technologies already exist today and which is fully competitive in the conventional application fields of diesel trucks. In contrast to other alternative fuels, trucks powered by natural gas have a high degree of usability, especially over long distances. The use of natural gas as a fuel offers logistics companies significant economic advantages: The lower fuel prices for natural gas compared to diesel, a current toll exemption for natural gas trucks on all motorways and federal highways, and investment support from the federal government for the purchase of a natural gas truck as a sales appeal achieve significant cost savings for freight forwarders.

The nationwide infrastructure in Germany and the Czech Republic is also making a major contribution to making natural gas increasingly attractive as a fuel for the heavy-duty traffic. In addition, the Europe-wide filling station network will be further expanded and improved so that natural gas fuel will be available as an alternative fuel on all major roads of the trans-European transport network.
